A taper lock pulley uses a special tapered bushing and screws to create a secure, friction-based connection to a rotating shaft. This system offers a significant advantage over conventional pulleys, which often require precise machining of keyways or set screws for a tight fit. The easy installation and removal process makes taper lock pulleys ideal for industrial applications where minimizing downtime is critical. How it worksThe taper lock system involves three main components: the pulley, a tapered bushing, and set screws. 
  1. The pulley has a conical bore designed to fit the external taper of the bushing.
  2. The bushing is split along its length and has a tapered outer surface that mates with the bore of the pulley.
  3. As the screws are tightened, they pull the bushing further into the pulley's tapered bore. This causes the bushing to compress and create a powerful, uniform grip around the shaft, similar to a shrink fit.
