A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve used to start, regulate, or stop the flow of fluids in a piping system. A disc, or "butterfly," is mounted on a rotating shaft inside the valve body. Rotating the disc 90 degrees fully opens or closes the valve.How it works
  • When fully open, the disc is parallel to the flow, causing minimal obstruction and a small pressure drop.
  • When fully closed, the disc is perpendicular to the flow and is pressed against a seat, which creates a tight seal and stops the flow.
  • For flow regulation or "throttling," the disc can be held at intermediate angles. 
Key components
  • Body: The main structure that contains all internal parts and connects to the piping system.
  • Disc: The rotating metal plate that regulates or blocks the fluid flow. The disc design and material can vary for specific applications.
  • Stem: The shaft that connects the disc to the external operating mechanism and transmits the torque required to open or close the valve.
  • Seat: A liner inside the valve body that provides a seal for the disc. It can be made from soft materials like elastomers or from metal for high-temperature and high-pressure applications.
  • Operating Mechanism: The handle, gear, or actuator that controls the stem to turn the disc. Manual operation uses a lever or handwheel, while automated valves use electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuators. 
Types of butterfly valvesButterfly valves are categorized based on their connection type and disc design. By connection type:
  • Wafer-style: The most common and economical design, it is sandwiched between two pipe flanges and held in place by long bolts that pass through the valve body. It is not suitable for "dead-end service," where a pipeline is disconnected on one side.
  • Lug-style: Features threaded inserts on the valve body, allowing it to be bolted to the pipeline flanges. This design supports dead-end service, where one side of the pipe can be removed without affecting the other.
  • Double-flanged: Has a flange on both sides of the valve, providing a secure and stable connection. It is often used for large-diameter pipelines. 
By disc design (offset):
  • Zero-offset (concentric): The most basic design, with the stem centered in the middle of the disc. Sealing is achieved through a resilient soft seat, which is suitable for low-pressure and low-temperature applications.
  • Double-offset (high-performance): The stem is offset behind the disc, and the stem's axis is also offset from the pipe's centerline. This reduces friction during operation, minimizes seat wear, and is suitable for higher-pressure and higher-temperature applications.
  • Triple-offset: The most advanced design, with three offsets that create a conical sealing surface. This eliminates rubbing between the seat and disc, providing bubble-tight shutoff even in severe conditions, including high pressure and high temperature. 
Common applicationsButterfly valves are widely used across industries due to their compact, lightweight, and cost-effective design. 
  • Water and wastewater treatment: Handling large volumes of water, slurries, and sludge.
  • Chemical processing: Moving various fluids, including corrosive chemicals. Material selection for the body, disc, and seat is crucial.
  • Oil and gas: For applications involving high volumes of fluids and varying pressures, especially in refining and processing.
  • HVAC systems: Controlling airflow in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  • Food and beverage: Handling processes that require efficiency, cleanliness, and precise fluid control.
